Home Get Active Successful Organising
Academy rising star Lorraine Forrester07 October 2007United Co-op Travel rep Lorraine Forrester recruited new members, identified new activists and raised the union’s profile in dozens of retail outlets during her six-months with Usdaw’s Organising Academy "It’s been a fantastic six months,” said the 42 year-old, who has been a rep for a year at her shop in York. “I’ve made some real breakthroughs in stores where we had little or no membership such as Primark, Ikea, Co-op, Morrisons and Sainsburys Local/Jacksons. “Having quality time to spend with staff helps to identify the issues and you get a clearer idea of what to focus on. “You can then explain face to face that issues such as low pay, unpaid breaks, unreasonable requests from management, can all be resolved with the union on board. “I’ve enjoyed every minute of my time with the Academy and I know that the work I’ve done in introducing the union to new members will make a real difference to their working lives.” “I strongly believe that every worker should join the union and if you really want to improve things you need to get more involved not only in your workplace but divisionally and nationally. “I try to get to branch meetings and divisional conferences and I was a first time delegate at this year’s ADM, all great experiences. “Link this with the excellent reps training I’ve had from Usdaw and I feel very comfortable in my role as a rep.” Contact Details Media and Communications Department Ph: 0161 224 2804 Fax: 0161 249 2490 communications@usdaw.org.uk |
