Home Get Active Successful Organising
Young and Active - Richard Tipler11 October 2007At the tender age of 22, Richard Tipler is already well known in his native Midlands division as an experienced activist. “It’s just been a natural progression,” said Tesco general assistant Richard who works at the Wellingborough store in Northamptonshire. “I was elected store rep three years ago and soon after got involved with our divisional youth committee. I was elected branch chair early last year and later health and safety rep. “It’s been an amazing learning curve, both very rewarding and enjoyable. You never stop learning. And I have the back up and full support of the other reps in my store, my area organiser and my local office. “I like being active and I try to get involved in as much as I can. Branch meetings, divisional conference and the divisional youth committee keep me in touch and up-to-date with what’s going on in the division and nationally, that’s important because I’m better informed and equipped to help my members. Last year I attended my first annual delegate meeting as a visitor – that was a brilliant experience and one I’d definitely recommend to all activists. “I’d like to see more young reps, particularly in retail. With more and more young people choosing a career in retail these days there’s massive potential for membership and young reps are the best recruiters of other young workers.” Contact Details Media and Communications Department Ph: 0161 224 2804 Fax: 0161 249 2490 communications@usdaw.org.uk |
