The right blend for Liz and Anna

17 October 2007

When experienced rep Liz Peacock took young rep Anna Dockerill under her wing little did she know her protege would be ready to fly the nest so soon.

“Anna’s been terrific, a real breath of fresh air,” said customer service assistant, Liz, 51 who works with Anna at the Tesco Metro store in Portslade, East Sussex. “She had a hard act to follow when she took over her role from long standing rep Lynn Yeo who has moved to Scotland.

“But already Anna’s showing good signs of being a very able, well respected rep. She’s been in the job for six months and already recruited her section manager, a real conquest as I’ve been trying for years without any success.

“And she’s also getting recognition and respect from her young colleagues who immediately come to see her when they need help and advice.

“Membership is very good, around 80 per cent, obviously we want to maintain and build on this and I’m confident with Anna alongside we can do it.”

Stock controller Anna, 22, said: “I love being a rep. There’s a lot to learn. I’m a health and safety rep as well, which is very interesting.

“The union has so much to offer. Campaign days have worked well in our store recently. Parents and carers, Freedom From Fear, and Save Our Sundays are great issues to discuss when recruiting.

“Liz is my coach and my mentor. She’s been fantastic. I’m enjoying my training with Usdaw and meeting reps from other workplaces. I’d like to see more young reps – it’s a great experience.”
