Activists make their first visit

15 October 2007

The impressive surroundings of Wortley Hall in Yorkshire provided an ideal setting for this year’s summer schools which attracted more than 120 activists from across the UK and from all Usdaw sectors.

Fifty two reps were at the first series summer school which caters for new activists who have just started out as union reps.

The six day residential course looks at union values, organising methods, meeting and presentation skills, and equality issues.

Stephen Davies, 19, from Tesco Llanelli was the youngest rep there and it was his first training course. I came here to get a better knowledge of how the union works,” he said. “It’s been very informative and although I’m the most inexperienced rep here everyone has been willing to help me. So it’s been very good. I’ve enjoyed it.”

Cathryn Williams, an admin supervisor at Sainsbury’s in Chadderston has been a rep for five years and has been on a number of training courses. “This is the first one to explain how the union works, and its structure,” she said. “We looked at speech writing and preparing propositions for our mock ADM. It was quite scary at first getting up in front of people but it was brilliant. The week is very intense but it worked very well.”

Boots sales planner Nick Entwistle from Blackpool admitted to being ‘a bit nervous’ even though he has been a rep for three years. “It was a very good course,” he said. “A friendly atmosphere, lovely surroundings, and the chance to meet people from every part of Usdaw. Wortley Hall is better than a modern hotel, very comfortable, and with lovely grounds.”

Ann McSherry, a rep at Tesco in Northern Ireland was one of the more experienced activists on the course. “I’ve done some stand down work which I enjoyed and this school has got me thinking about the second series next year and maybe the Academy,” she said.

“This course allows everyone to socialise and relax together at the end of a long day of class work. The accommodation is excellent, the food is very good too. All-in-all this summer school was spot on.”

Usdaw holds two summer schools every year and each division can nominate active reps for consideration by the executive council.

The first series school is for new reps and the second series is for more experienced activists. If you are interested you should contact your branch secretary or local union office in the first instance.

You can also find out more in the training area.
