Home Get Active Successful Organising
Fast forward on recruitment20 July 2007The union’s first ever national membership week proved a roaring success with thousands of new members recruited at hundreds of workplaces across the UK during the special week held at the end of July. Teams of reps and activists joined area organisers, recruitment and development officers and training officers at a variety of divisional recruitment events. "Our first ever national membership week has been a massive success," said General Secretary John Hannett. "Early indications tell us that thousands of new members have already signed up with the numbers still coming in. "The success is down to the hard work of our teams of reps and activists working together to organise a number of activities in their divisions. "As well as increasing membership we've also raised the union's profile in workplaces where we didn't have a lot of activity and re-established ourselves in workplaces where union activity may have become a little stale. "The feedback from the reps is very positive and the event is set to become a regular in the union's diary." Divisional officer Gary Holz put it down to the hard work and dedication of the reps and officials. "It's been an exciting divisional activity which has paid dividends," he said. "We've recruited more than 400 new members across all the sectors we organise and signed up a number of new reps and activists." It was a similar story in the Scottish division. "With more than 500 new members we more than doubled our weekly intake," said divisional officer Lawrence Wason. "The week helped focus our activity on particular workplaces where we had some members but could be doing better. The week certainly helped raise our profile. So it's paid off on a number of fronts." General Secretary John Hannett and Deputy General Secretary Paddy Lillis added their support to the event and joined North West deputy divisional officer Dave Gill on a visit to Tesco and the Co-op in Douglas, Isle of Man. From there it was a short trip across the water to Northern Ireland to hand out leaflets to staff, and members of the public, outside Marks & Spencer in Belfast and help bolster the union's campaign for recognition.
