Home Get Active Successful Organising
Academy: Angela Bethell15 July 2007Working with the Academy was just the challenge Tesco team leader Angela Bethell needed, and she is enjoying every minute of it. "I've been a rep for three years in my store in New Malden, Surrey, and I really enjoy it," said the 42 year-old. "I thought I'd apply for the Academy after doing some stand down with Tesco last year, I was thrilled when I heard I'd been selected and couldn't wait to get started. "It's been a brilliant experience and I've had some real success especially in the Co-op stores where I've recruited new members as well as new reps. "Most of the time it's the same story - with staff saying 'we've never had anyone from the union visit our store'. "They are genuinely interested in what you have to say and what the union can do for them. You can see why it's been difficult recruiting in small stores such as the Co-ops because they need a lot more support and backup than big stores such as Tesco and Sainsbury's where there might be a large membership and a good team of reps in place. "Ideally you need a network of reps who are happy to take on board other local Co-ops as well as their own. If we can do this then I'm convinced we will build up our membership and the union's profile with members in the Co-op where there is massive potential for growth."
Academy lowdownUsdaw's organising officers, who are part of the union's Academy, are playing their part in boosting membership and setting up teams of reps in workplaces across the UK. The officers spend six months visiting all sorts of companies, recruiting new members, encouraging existing members to become reps, and laying the foundations for self-sufficiency in shops and warehouses, many of which have not had a visit from a union official for many years, if at all. They also have four weeks of training at the union's national training centre and have individual area organisers as mentors during their time with the Academy. www.usdaw.org.uk/getactive/academy Contact Details Media and Communications Department Ph: 0161 224 2804 Fax: 0161 249 2490 communications@usdaw.org.uk |
