Stand down reps try something different22 July 2007Dynamic duo Richard Smith and Adrian Brown’s recruitment techniques have paid dividends with more than 200 new Sainsbury’s members as well as seven new reps signed up during their time as stand down reps. The pair are proving to be natural born recruiters having left their own workplaces fit and healthy before embarking on the three-month stint visiting stores in and around their native Surrey. "More Sainsbury's reps should take advantage of the stand down facility agreement," said Adrian who works at the North Cheam store. "It's an ideal opportunity to increase membership which gives Sainsbury's members more influence in major decisions. "Members are there for the signing especially in stores where they've never had a visit from the union before." "We had a good response in all the stores we targeted and people were genuinely interested in finding out more," said Richard, who works at the Streatham Common store. "You can tell almost immediately when you enter a store whether or not there's a good union profile. "We were especially pleased to recruit seven new reps as well as a number of people who wanted to be activists in their store but not go the full hog of taking on the permanent job of rep. "It'll be interesting to see how things develop in the future now that there's an influence in these stores. "It's been a great experience and one that both of us are keen to repeat. We're going back to our own stores full of enthusiasm and to check how things have been going during our time out."
