Home Get Active Successful Organising
Recruitment drive pays off at Morrisons02 August 2007It was instant success for Morrisons reps Wendy Dracup and Christine Green as they signed up more than 70 members at their first ever recruitment drive at their store in Yate, Bristol. Wendy, fresh from her shop stewards training course, wasted no time in persuading colleague Christine Green to join her as a rep. "We had 23 members when I was elected as a rep last June, so there was plenty of room for improvement," said Wendy. "I'd only been a rep a matter of weeks when I had to deal with a disciplinary. Luckily my area organiser Adrian Collins was on hand to guide me through and we had a good result. It was a great feeling and I picked up new members on the back of this. Christine and I decided one-to-one recruitment was the best approach. There had never been any union activity in our store and this would help raise the profile," added Christine. "This way you can introduce yourself and find out what benefits are most attractive to each individual and how the union can tailor their needs. "Legal Plus and the free will writing service are the most popular. Once one joins and the word gets around, others follow - it's been a real success, even our line managers and supervisors have joined. "Our next recruitment drive will focus on the night shift where we're hoping we'll be just as successful." For more info visit: www.usdaw.org.uk/getactive
