Morrisons rep makes her mark10 August 2007Sata rep Sandra Nash’s persuasive but gentle approach to recruitment has seen a 30 per cent boost in membership at the Morrisons store in Elvetham Heath in Guildford. Former lone rep Sandra has been an activist for fourteen months and has slowly but surely raised the profile of the union in her store with 60 new members signing up. "I like to give new starters time to settle in and find their way before I approach them," said Sandra a cash office supervisor. "I organise a recruitment day once a month in the staff canteen. I basically set my stall out with a full range of leaflets, the Arena magazine and all the latest campaign materials. "Because the store is right in the middle of one of the most expensive housing estates in the UK the staff working here generally don't know too much about trade unions. "It's interesting to see their reaction when they realise what the union can actually do for them. "I take the opportunity to chat to staff in between breaks. It works because it's informal and people are more than happy to speak to me and take a leaflet or two away with them. "I really enjoy being a rep. I love the training courses as well as meeting reps from other Morrisons stores and I went to my first ADM this year, it was a fantastic experience. "The message is getting across that the union is here to help. I've just recruited a new rep for the night shift and my next goal is to enlist the help of a young rep."
