Home Get Active Successful Organising
Sajjad Khan’s support network01 August 2007For many activists being the only rep in store can be a very daunting prospect but 23 year-old Sajjad Khan uses his network of activists to support him. Sajjad who works at the Tesco Express store in Horsforth, Leeds, keeps in regular contact with local reps and his area organiser to help him deal with any issues. "Knowing that I can contact other reps in the area at any time of the day not only helps me feel at ease but helps with communication as well as keeping me up-to-date with all sorts of information," said Sajjad who has been a union rep and health and safety rep for two years. "The regular forum meetings help sort things out quickly and without any hassle. Any problems are raised at store level and usually sorted out with my manager. "I was really impressed with how the area organiser from the Leeds office put the union across to me at my induction three years ago when the store first opened and I had no hesitation in joining. I also know that help and advice is only a phone call away from my area organiser. "I try to get it over in the same way when I'm doing my inductions in store. I try to be honest and friendly and basically just get to know them so that even if they don't join immediately they go away knowing that I'm approachable and here to help and maybe they'll think again about joining. "I enjoy being involved and I'm proud to be a rep helping my colleagues. I'd like to get more involved with the union and know that being a rep is a great opportunity for me."
