Vicky calls for more in-store reps28 July 2007Mum-to-be Vicky Brown is on a mission to increase the number of members and reps at discount chain Poundland. Four years after signing a recognition agreement Vicky believes the time is right to push ahead. "I've been on training courses where I've been the only Poundland rep so I'd like to see more of my work colleagues getting involved. People don't realise just how many different areas the union gets involved in," said Vicky, 24, a part-time sales assistant from Barnsley in Yorkshire who is expecting her second child in a couple of months. "I know I didn't, but being a union rep and a health and safety rep has opened my eyes and made me realise just how valuable the union is. "There's all the campaigning that helps improve life for young workers, parents and carers, health and safety as well as making inroads into preventing violence in the workplace - the list goes on. "There's all the work around flexible working and family-friendly issues. I needed advice when I returned to work after maternity leave following the birth of my first child. I wasn't sure what my rights were and my area organiser was on hand to help. "Poundland are great to work for and I have a brilliant relationship with my manager so there's no stopping members from getting involved," said Vicky. "There has been some real improvements with pay and holiday entitlement during the last four years so things are looking good. "I enjoy my union work. There's a lot to learn and it makes my job more enjoyable. Hopefully it won't be too long before there are more active Poundland reps out there."
