Jon keeps it in the family15 August 2007If you take time out to explain all the benefits young people will join the union, says general assistant and union rep Jon Kirk, 21, who works at the Tesco store in Windsor, Berkshire. "I had no hesitation in joining straight from school aged 17 during my induction and I became a rep two years later," said Jon. "I didn't need to be persuaded because my dad was a rep for the transport and general workers union so I had a good idea what it involved. "Inductions are the best way to recruit because you have quality time to spend with new starters which helps build up a rapport. "If they don't join there and then they usually join when they have a problem or a colleague has had to call on the union for help and the union's got a good result for them. "We're now starting to build up membership in my store and we have more and more young people joining up as well. There's about 400 staff and around a quarter are 25 and under, mainly students working evenings and weekends. Basically, my experience has been if one joins then others soon follow. "Two other reps Len Nash and Agnes Ryan are always available when I need any help or advice. We work well together. "I enjoy being a rep, there's a lot to learn but I do get time off to attend Usdaw's training sessions, which are really well put together. Looking to the future I'd like to find out more about Usdaw's Academy or get involved in some stand down recruitment."
