Rollercoaster ride for Hollie26 June 2007Young rep Hollie Weeks went straight from a tailor made training course to the shopfloor and recruited more than 40 members as part of her stint as a stand-down rep. The 22 year-old Sainsbury's activist took part in a three day course at the national training centre in Warrington with 12 colleagues. "This really helped me prepare myself, build my confidence and fire me with enthusiasm," said Hollie, who works at the Cobham store. "It was also a great opportunity to meet and learn from other Sainsbury's reps based at other stores across the UK." After the course Hollie then visited Sainsbury's stores in the Surrey area and encountered both ends of the recruitment spectrum. "Let's just say I had a very mixed reaction. There are some areas where people are just not interested in trade unions and will never join no matter what you say to them. "At times like that recruiting on your own can be a very lonely experience especially when there is no interest at all from staff, you come away feeling dejected. However, the next day you visit another store and people are really interested so you're really upbeat again. "It's that sort of a rollercoaster ride, but what a fantastic experience. "You hear other reps say it's an eye opener, but you don't realise it until you're out there that it really is, no two stores are the same. "My workplace is well organised and although you don't take it for granted that it's the same everywhere, you're not really prepared for what it's like," added Hollie who is also a health and safety rep and a youth activist. "I've also recruited one new store rep so far. But more importantly I've raised the union's profile in Sainsbury's stores where there has never been a visit from Usdaw before. "I'll be working with my area organiser Chris Skilton who supported me throughout, about follow up visits. "By combining the course with practical experience I've had the best of both worlds. "I've always had excellent training from Usdaw and this course was no different. It's hard work but I'd do it again and thoroughly enjoyed it."
