Tesco: The 24/7 store11 July 2007Tesco has the single biggest block of union members in the private sector. Flying the flag high in the North West with an impressive 98 per cent membership is a team of seven reps from the Tesco Longton Extra store in Staffordshire. "It's a 24/7 operation with more than 600 staff aged between 16 and 67," said Julie Keenan, who has been a rep at the store since it opened its doors four and a half years ago. "We look after all our members needs from the Supporting Your Attendance policy to health and safety and more recently lifelong learning. Every department is covered with reps on the twilight and weekend shifts. "Our notice board and a regular newsletter keep members up-to-date with everything from maternity rights to legal plus. Word soon spreads when reps do a good job." Julie works closely with fellow rep Ellen Shaw whose own special style of recruitment has just landed her a six-month secondment to the union's Organising Academy. "It pays to attend all inductions," said Ellen, who has been a rep for two years. "You have time to introduce yourself as well as the many benefits of union membership to every new starter right from day one. "Usdaw's training is excellent. Not only does it improve your knowledge, but also your confidence to deal with the many different situations you are faced with each day. "I've recently completed a period of stand down recruitment in other local stores. It's a real eye opener but I'd certainly recommend it, I learned a lot in a short period of time."
