Tesco: The dot.com rep10 June 2007Tesco boasts Usdaw’s biggest single membership base with more than 130,000 members in hundreds of Tesco workplaces across the UK. Tesco dot.com rep Dee Margetson and her team of reps deliver a first-class service to more than 480 members at the unique online home shopping store in Croydon. "It's easier to recruit new starters when you have a well organised workplace," said Dee, 27, who has been a rep for 18 months. "We have a team of ten reps looking after our members, currently running at 92 per cent. "Our success rate at inductions is excellent. I signed up 49 new members at the last session. Every new starter has a personal invite attached to their wage slip inviting them along to the next induction session. "This helps to introduce ourselves and the benefits of membership immediately and underlines the fact that the company are fully on-board. "Reps cover every shift. We have three reps looking after our 150 dot.com drivers and also two Polish reps so members know who to speak to when they need advice or have a problem. "Safety is a very important issue for everyone here, warehouse staff, drivers and clerical workers. So most of our reps are also fully trained health and safety reps. "When the union has a good profile in the workplace everyone can see the benefits. Its latest initiative - Check Out Learning - has already created a buzz around the place with members queuing up to find out what it's all about. "With the company's plans to expand its internet shopping operation the team are confident that a new influx of staff will mean more signed-up members."
