Home Get Active Successful Organising
Michele pounds the streets for members05 December 2006Not content with stacking up 100 per cent membership in her own store, Poundland rep Michele Mellor set out on her very own recruitment drive and recruited 73 new members and five new reps. “I wanted to get more involved after signing everyone up in my store including my store manager and assistant manager,” said the 39 year-old shop assistant who works at the Oldham store. “I read about stand down recruiting in Network and contacted my area organiser Wendy Murphy for more information. She spoke to the company and negotiated four weeks time off for me. I couldn’t wait to get started. “My local office provided me with a list of all the stores in the north west. I contacted the store managers and arranged my visits around a close geographical area so I made the most of my time. “I visited 17 stores from Preston in Lancashire to Wrexham in North Wales. I set up in the staff canteen armed with my union leaflets and encouraged staff to talk to me. People wanted to find out more about the union and were interested to find out that Poundland had signed a recognition agreement with Usdaw three years ago. I was very pleased with the response, especially the new reps who signed up – now I won’t feel as lonely when I attend national union events. It was a brilliant experience and it has helped me improve my confidence, and my organisational and communication skills. I can’t wait for my next assignment.” Contact Details Media and Communications Department Ph: 0161 224 2804 Fax: 0161 249 2490 communications@usdaw.org.uk |
