Home Get Active Successful Organising
Usdaw’s two wise men01 December 2006A new improved recruitment facility with leading national milk processor and distributor, Robert Wiseman Dairies, is helping to boost union membership and the quota of reps in depots across the UK. Experienced reps Mick Simpson from the Bellshill depot near Glasgow and Douggie Napier from the East Kilbride site were enlisted for the seven-week national recruitment drive. “It’s been a fantastic experience and a real learning curve,” said Mick. “Recent company expansion presented an ideal opportunity to recruit and organise. So there was real potential for growth. I visited depots in Taunton, Bristol, Northampton, Leeds and Carlisle. It’s a mixed bag out there with membership levels and activity varying from site to site, but overall I had a warm welcome and recruited members and reps at each site.” “My experiences were very similar,” said Douggie. “It was a real eye-opener. The level of organisation varied from depot to depot. But my visits certainly made an impact and we now have some structures in place to build on with members and reps recruited at each depot. The company have been very supportive and I had a good response from the site managers during each visit.” “I signed the original agreement with the company six years ago and we have worked steadily to make improvements to it,” said General Secretary John Hannett. “All credit to the forum reps who negotiated this improved facility.” Contact Details Media and Communications Department Ph: 0161 224 2804 Fax: 0161 249 2490 communications@usdaw.org.uk |
