Home Get Active Successful Organising
Building your confidence20 November 2006Sainsbury’s distribution worker Kieron Murphy spent six months with last year’s academy working on a variety of projects in the Eastern division. “It was a fantastic experience said Kieron, 45. “It was exactly what I was looking for. Recruiting and organising in retail was a whole new experience for me having come from distribution. “I learned so much in such a short space of time and the training and support from Usdaw was excellent. “After the academy I was seconded to Usdaw for 12 months. This gave me the opportunity to develop my skills further. “I worked with reps where we already had agreements and a membership presence, but for a variety of reasons were not very well organised. It’s very rewarding helping reps to organise themselves and their workplaces.” It was second time lucky for Morrisons’ cashier Mary Harker, 51, who was on the Academy in 2005 having first applied for the 2004 intake. “Don’t be put off,” she said. “I was determined to have another go after I missed out in 2004 and I’m delighted I did. I’d have missed so much. “The Academy is a brilliant opportunity to develop your skills and self-confidence – the only down side is the six months go so quickly! The training and support from Usdaw is excellent. It helps if you are a well-organised person and approach each project in a systematic way. “I loved every minute of it. It was challenging, rewarding and I found the experience very worthwhile.” Contact Details Media and Communications Department Ph: 0161 224 2804 Fax: 0161 249 2490 communications@usdaw.org.uk |
