Home Get Active Successful Organising
Special week boosts membership10 April 2007Richard Ward and his team of reps at the JD Williams Home Shopping call centre in Manchester ran a very successful recruitment week in January, which saw membership levels increase by ten per cent. “Being a call centre we have a high turnover of staff,” said Richard who is one of seven reps at the site. “This means recruitment is always an ongoing process. We can recruit 20 new members in a week but at the same time lose 20 members of staff. “We are the main call centre for JD Williams employing 1,100 staff. Although membership is quite healthy and currently running at just over 70 per cent, we’re always looking at ways to improve on this and increase the union’s profile. “The recruitment week went very well. We had stalls set up at the two main entrances with reps on hand from eight in the morning until six at night. “We handed out leaflets and offered advice to new and existing members. We also ran a a prize draw for everyone which added a little bit more interest to the day. “None of our reps work weekends but they were more than happy to come in on their days off on a rota basis and target our weekend-only workers. “Lifelong learning is our latest project and union learning rep Marie Taylor has been influential in getting the initiative off the ground. We’re hoping to pick up more members once the learning centre is up and running.” Contact Details Media and Communications Department Ph: 0161 224 2804 Fax: 0161 249 2490 communications@usdaw.org.uk |
