Transport & distribution – getting organised

It was a double first for reps from both Wiseman Dairies and Co-op Retail Logistics who recently attended their first ever national get-togethers at Usdaw’s training centre in Warrington.
Organising the workplace was top of the agenda. “We thought about how we could recruit and organise our sites in a more structured way,” said Wiseman’s driver Chris Green from Bristol. “I returned to work and set up a couple of awareness days, where not only did I sign up new members but three new reps as well.”
Driver Mick Simpson from the Bellshill Dairy in Scotland said: “Nationally it’s looking good. The company are on board and the union is training reps to be self-sufficient. Usdaw has also successfully negotiated stand down facilities for the reps at the company.”
Meanwhile, bringing together Co-op retail logistics reps from across the UK paid off. Administrator Diane Palmer was at the special four-day get-together in September. “It worked well because the course was built around us and so we could relate to all of the issues raised,” she said.
“We were encouraged to work together, and devise a six-month recruitment and organising plan specific to our own workplaces. I now aim to set up a couple of union awareness days on site.”
