Academy award for activist Sarah16 October 2006Co-op rep Sarah France has packed more in to her two and a half years with Usdaw than most people manage in twenty years. The 24 year-old clerical worker, based at the Co-operative Group in Manchester, has just secured a secondment to the TUC Academy for 12 months. Sarah will work for the Community trade union recruiting and organising in the North West. “Lifelong learning was the key to me getting involved with Usdaw a couple of years ago,” said Sarah. “I took on the role of learning rep and then learning centre co-ordinator. This unlocked a whole new world. I soon became more involved with the union to the point where there was hardly a week went by when I wasn’t attending or speaking at some kind of union activity.” Sarah has held a number of positions during her time as an activist, including branch secretary of K57 North West Co-operative branch, youth committee member and divisional councillor. She is also a regular speaker at ADM. Her activity has also taken on an international dimension with a trip to Chicago last year to represent Usdaw at the Union Network International youth seminar. Her CV doesn’t end there as she also spent six months with Usdaw’s Organising Academy last year. “It’s been a fantastic couple of years,” said Sarah. “I’ve learned so much and I’ve been supported and encouraged all the way by Usdaw. I’m really looking forward to my new role and the challenge of working in a totally different sector.” Contact Details Media and Communications Department Ph: 0161 224 2804 Fax: 0161 249 2490 communications@usdaw.org.uk |
