Usdaw gears up for the academy’s fourth year

29 November 2005

Usdaw’s now well-established academy offers committed and enthusiastic reps the chance to spend six months away from work on secondment to Usdaw. You will be given expert training and support as you spend time recruiting and organising in a variety of workplaces. You’ll have a great time, but don’t take our word for it – here’s what two of the 2005 academy graduates had to say . . .

It’s been a fantastic experience, said Sainsbury's distribution worker Kieron Murphy, 45. “It was exactly what I was looking for.

“I worked on a variety of interesting projects, most of them in retail. Each one unique with its own set of problems. Some workplaces have reps in place but very little activity and others where total apathy had set in. It was a very mixed bag - and for me a completely new ball game as I came from distribution and a very well organised workplace.

“I’ve learned so much in such a short space of time. The training and mentoring from Usdaw was excellent, if I needed help or assistance I only had to ask and it was there.”

The academy is a brilliant opportunity to develop your skills and self-confidence, said Morrisons cashier Mary Harker, 50. “The only down side is the six months go so quickly!

“The training you get from Usdaw is top-class and at regular intervals during the secondment. It helps if you’re a well-organised person and approach each project in a systematic way. Make a report, map the workplace, and keep notes on your visits and on what to follow up.

“I was selected at my second attempt so don’t be put off if you don’t get through the first time you apply, or if like me you don’t drive, you can get round that.

“I loved every minute of it. It was challenging and, although frustrating at times, more often than not very rewarding. There’s a real buzz when you get a positive result and this makes it all worthwhile.”
