Home Get Active Successful Organising
New team ready for challenge29 June 2006Twenty nine reps from across the country are gearing up for their six-month secondment to Usdaw’s Organising Academy – now in its fourth year. The new recruits started in May and will be spending their time on a variety of organising and recruitment projects across their divisions. The education department provides four weeks of training and each of the reps are supported by a local official who acts as a coach. The Academy has proven to be very successful over the last three years with more than 18,000 new members recruited and 800 new reps on board. Tesco duo Suzie Green and Tony Hocking are visiting stores in Devon and Cornwall. “This is a fantastic opportunity for me,” said Suzie, who works at Lee Mill, in Devon. “I’ve worked hard to organise my workplace and build up the membership from 30 to 80 per cent. My goal now is to do this in Sainsbury’s and Somerfield. I’m really looking forward to the challenge.” Colleague Tony Hocking is off to a flying start. “After an excellent week’s training in Warrington I was raring to go,” he said. “In my first few weeks I visited Co-op stores in Penzance, Cambourne and Redruth. I’ve had a warm welcome from both management and staff. I’ve recruited new members and more importantly persuaded one or two to become reps. It’s clear staff are genuinely pleased to see someone from the union.” Deputy general secretary Paddy Lillis said: “The Academy is all about developing reps and building our levels of organisation. The organising officers get the best training available and they in turn help to develop other reps. It’s a win-win situation.”
