National winner of the 2005 Individual Organising Award - Ray Clarke21 January 2006Ray won the 2005 Individual Organising Award for outstanding work at the Wincanton Distribution site at Swan Valley near Northampton which supplies the Morrisons supermarket chain. Ray has been a powerhouse in boosting membership on this site up to 90% and has recruited 400 members personally.
The Swan Valley site has a number of workers from Eastern Europe so Ray set to work recruiting a Polish shop steward and made sure he had translated leaflets to help recruit this vulnerable section of the workforce. “This used to be a Safeways site and after it went over to Morrisons there was a lot of uncertainty but we managed to convince people here that Usdaw would protect their rights. I'm particularly proud we've done so much good work with our Polish colleagues who are much valued members of the Wincanton team,” said Ray.
