Reps cash in on Tesco/Usdaw partnership deal11 July 2005Tesco stock controller Susan Coutts is the pride of Scotland after she won the 2004 National Recruitment Award for her outstanding success. “It was a real honour to receive the award,” said Susan, 40, who works at the Metro store in Glasgow. “Last year I recruited more than 100 new members in stores across my area.” Susan made the most of the Tesco/Usdaw partnership deal which allows some reps time off from work to recruit in nearby stores. “This is a fantastic facility,” she said. “Thanks to my area organiser Alan McVie who spoke to my manager and negotiated 12 weeks release for me. I then listed the stores I wanted to visit, contacted the manager and set up a convenient time to visit. “It was a very busy time but I had a very positive response from all the stores I visited. I identified members who had benefited from their union membership, such as using the Legal Plus Service. I used their examples to persuade potential members to join. “A lot of people I spoke to didn’t even realise the scope of their membership and the various benefits on offer. I soon put them right.” • If you have had a successful recruitment drive in your workplace the Arena team wants to hear about it. • We can arrange a photographer to visit your workplace and raise the profile of Usdaw in your store, factory, warehouse, or call centre – in fact wherever you work we’re interested. • Call one of the Arena team on 0161 249 2444/5 for more details or e-mail: arena@usdaw.org.uk Contact Details Media and Communications Department Ph: 0161 224 2804 Fax: 0161 248 8588 communications@usdaw.org.uk http://www.usdaw.org.uk/getactive/successful_organising/ |
