The next generation set out to make their mark

19 June 2005

Twenty-three of Usdaw's finest activists will visit, recruit and organise hundreds of workplaces across the UK as part of the union’s Organising Academy 2005.

The new team of Organising Officers, who bring with them an abundance of enthusiasm and a variety of experience, will spend six months seconded to the union. Each will be assigned a full-time official for guidance and support.

“We’ve had to increase the number this year because the standard of applicants was so good,” said deputy general secretary Paddy Lillis.

“The Academy is a key part of our organising strategy. Usdaw is moving forward and our activists are at the heart of our organising agenda.”

Over the last two years, the Academy has trained 33 reps who have recruited 11,000 new members after launching 200 organising campaigns.

This year’s Academy team, which started in May, recruited more than 1,000 members in its first three weeks.

The intense six months includes four weeks of training with the rest spent in workplaces across all Usdaw sectors.

Network caught up with three of the new recruits: “The Academy is a brilliant opportunity to help develop my organising skills and knowledge of other workplaces,” said checkout supervisor Mary Harker who works for Morrisons in Bishop Auckland, Co Durham.

“I want to improve my organising and communications skills so that I can do a better job for union members in the workplace,” said fishmonger Carole Hall from Tesco, NewtownAbbey, Northern Ireland.

“I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead,” said Parcelnet driver Declan Byrne from Eccles in Manchester. “I’d like to improve on the skills I already have by putting them to the test in the retail sector.”
