In-store action at Maldon

Most reps will tell you communication is the key to good organisation and the team of reps at Tesco in Maldon, Essex, can prove it.

They produce a monthly joint Usdaw/Tesco newsletter to keep members up-to-date with all the latest news and views.

The newsletter ‘Maldon News’ was the idea of forum rep and editor, Catherine Wells who is part of a team of five reps at the store. “The newsletter fits in with the whole partnership set up,” said the part-time petrol station cashier. “Management are fully supportive and actually help towards the production costs. Staff are happy that the latest news and information is being passed down to them.

“Every member of staff gets to see the newsletter because it is distributed with their wage slips. We see it as a good recruitment tool bringing relevant information to people who haven’t yet joined the union and we’re always looking at new ways to improve on our membership figures.”

Eastern divisional officer Norrie Slater was full of praise for the dedicated team of reps. “It’s an excellent newsletter,” he said. “It’s a great initiative by Catherine and the team and one that could possibly be rolled out across other Tesco stores around the country.”
