Academy organising in Tesco

29 October 2004

Usdaw’s Organising Officer, Paula Colbourne from South Wales and Western division, has now successfully run six organising campaigns including three within Tesco.

Paula said "Being an employee of Tesco I was keen to spend some time in my own locality, helping to recruit more reps and activists, supporting the existing reps to raise the profile of the union, helping to further develop their skills and enabling them to take full advantage of the partnership agreement.

"Jenny Graham, June Sharps and Sarah Brown have been key reps during the recruitment campaign at the Tesco Extra Yeovil. They are very keen, enthusiastic and I am sure they will continue to increase union membership".

The reps at Tesco Yeovil said "The best thing about having a campaign running in store with an organising officer is being given confidence, knowledge and support, therefore raising the profile of the union, giving us a clear direction and a way forward".

The Tesco stores in which Paula was running the campaigns were Honiton, Exmouth and Yeovil. The total amount of new members recruited was 91 between the three stores, which is an overall increase of 22%.

Paula went on to say "I have thoroughly enjoyed my six months being part of the Organising Academy and I would encourage any rep within Usdaw to apply. It has been a fantastic opportunity on which I hope to build. For me this is just the beginning. I have gained invaluable knowledge for my return to work in November and I am looking forward to help run further campaigns within my own store."
