Recently I visited, with some trepidation, a department store in Bristol. To my pleasant surprise I found that I was not only expected by the staff, but also warmly welcomed by them.
The interest I found was very exciting and I signed up eight people there and then with not much effort on my part. The new members are now talking among themselves to select a Shop Steward and are actively spreading the word, recruiting the staff who were not there when I visited.
Issues that were raised included working overtime without pay and bullying. So although this is quite a success, having raised membership, it will mean a lot of work for the union to build on this good start.
