Bright future for Angie

15 September 2008

It has been a meteoric rise for new academy organiser Angie Dewing who up until 18 months ago was quietly going about her business on the checkouts at Tesco in Dereham, Norfolk.

Since then the 46 year-old has made the step up from store rep to join the union's Academy1 to spend six months secondment recruiting and organising in stores across Norfolk. It is a long way from the checkouts.

"Getting involved in Usdaw has been a life-changing experience for me," said Angie. "The last 18 months have been absolutely brilliant and the Academy has been wonderful."

Angie decided to become an activist when her local rep helped her sort out a problem she had at work. Since then the mother-of-three grown up children has not looked back. "I was impressed with the support I got and I thought I'd like to do that, so I did. I signed up for the home study course and then went on to do a two-day introductory reps course. This was followed by a three-day course at my local union office. These were very informative and also helped me meet other reps and make useful contacts. Angie went to the Annual Delegate Meeting in April, which proved to be a real eye-opener for her. "The shear size of the conference surprised me," she said. "It was also very friendly so I'm hoping to go back next year.

"Prior to getting involved in Usdaw I rarely travelled outside of Norfolk now I'm getting out and about to various parts of the UK.

"My family have been very supportive. My son Chris is just about to leave for university, while my two daughters Nicola, 23 and Vicky, 26 live locally. I now have more time of my own and I'm enjoying devoting it to Usdaw, although I still find time to look after my granddaughter Leah.

"I've picked up a tremendous amount of knowledge along the way and this has helped my confidence grow. I'm also better organised now, both at home and at work. I've had some really rewarding times on the Academy. I recruited 12 out of 12 staff at one Argos store and generally I've been welcomed in all of the big retail stores.

"I've certainly developed since I became active. I don't know quite where it's all going to lead but my eyes are on the future and I'm really enjoying my time with Usdaw."
