Working time - promoting regulation and protectionDate: 30 April 2004
An Executive Council Statement to the 2004 Annual Delegate Meeting. This Statement is designed to help us to tackle one of the most challenging facts of working life in the UK - the long hours culture and its impact on our health and family lives. The Working Time Directive became law in the UK from 1 October 1998 and was warmly welcomed by the Union. The Regulations were supplemented by the Horizontal Amending Directive on 1 August 2003 to include more workers, such as many of those working in road transport in both mobile and non-mobile jobs. As a result, millions of working people now have important rights governing a maximum 48 hour week, paid holidays, limits on nightwork, daily and weekly rest periods and breaks from work. Thousands more mobile workers - and for Usdaw that means LGV drivers in road transport - will soon be covered by the new Road Transport Directive in March 2005. It's going to be a complex picture, and it's our job to make sure everyone knows about and understands the Regulations, old and new. The full version of this Statement is available to download at the end of this page. Working Time - Promoting Regulation and Protection was correct at date of publication April 2004.
