Information and consultation

Date: 30 April 2004

Information and consultation
Information and consultation

An Executive Council Statement to the 2004 Annual Delegate Meeting. This Statement is designed to look at potentially the most significant piece of employment legislation to be introduced in the UK in modern times.

From March 2005, UK employees, in all but very small companies, will have the right to be informed and consulted systematically through elected representatives on matters affecting their contracts, jobs, future employment and prospects for their company.

These Regulations therefore provide an opportunity for workers to have a voice in the workplace that they simply do not have at present. Furthermore, there is a golden opportunity for trade unions to boost our influence in the workplace and have our say on issues that are currently often beyond our scope.

The role of Usdaw and other trade unions in establishing information and consultation arrangements is therefore going to be crucial. It will be up to the Union to ensure that the best possible information and consultation arrangements are established in Usdaw companies, so that Usdaw members see real benefits from the Regulations.

It is likely that the Regulations will be different when they are published in their final form some time in 2004. Indeed, Usdaw and other unions are making representations to the Government where we would like to see certain changes. However, Usdaw can gain a head start by beginning to get to grips with the Regulations at this early stage. This booklet aims to give members, reps and officials an early opportunity to begin to understand the Regulations. We hope you find it useful.

The full version of this Statement is available to download at the end of this page.

Information and Consultation was correct at date of publication April 2004.
