Freedom From Fear campaign

Date: 30 April 2003

Freedom From Fear campaign
Freedom From Fear campaign

An Executive Council Statement to the 2003 Annual Delegate Meeting. This Statement sets out the key campaigning issues, based on the everyday experiences of Usdaw members and backed up by independent research.

Retail violence is an increasing problem for shopworkers across the UK. Usdaw is extremely concerned about the amount of abuse, threats and violent assaults our members are suffering.

To help tackle the problems members face, Usdaw has launched a major campaign to work with retail companies, police and politicians to raise awareness of what shopworkers have to put up with and to secure improvements for our members.

The Freedom From Fear Campaign was launched last October and this Executive Council Statement sets out the key campaigning issues, based on the everyday experiences of Usdaw members and backed up by independent research.

This Statement includes detailed advice on what Usdaw representatives can do in the workplace and explains why combating retail violence is vital, not just for our members but for employers too. It identifies practical activities that members can take, including writing to their MP or sending information to Central Office about workplace incidents. The campaign in the community is also outlined, such as the role of crime prevention partnerships and safer shopping partnerships, and how Usdaw members can play a part in these groups.

This document will be an important resource for Usdaw members over the next year. Retail violence is not just an industrial issue. It should be a matter of major national, regional and local government concern. By working in partnership with retail companies and with Government, Usdaw will help ensure that our shops and town centres are safer.

Violence and abuse of shopworkers should not be tolerated. Shopworkers have the right to be safe at work, free from the fear of violence and abuse, and treated with the respect they deserve.

Freedom From Fear campaign was correct at date of publication April 2003.
