Building a stronger union – recruitment and organisation for the 21st CenturyDate: 30 April 2001
An Executive Council Statement to the 2001 Annual Delegate Meeting. This Statement is designed to look at the way we recruit and organise members in the 21st Century. In 1998, the union's Annual Delegate Meeting wholeheartedly endorsed the Executive Council's analysis, aspirations and recommendations on a radical upheaval in the way we recruit and organise members. The Executive Council's view took the form of a policy statement entitled New Unionism. Three years ago those words New Unionism, the language and the analysis attached to them, may have been news to a lot of our people.
Putting it all into practice in a skillful and effective way certainly represented a massive challenge. The Executive Council and the union's wider leadership, however, remained committed to rising to that challenge and to driving forward on the guiding principles underpinning New Unionism. New Unionism set us ambitious and challenging goals. It meant changing, thinking and working differently and starting to build a different sort of union. Building a stronger union - recruitment and organisation for the 21st Century was correct at date of publication April 2001.
