Sustainable organising – power to Usdaw reps!Date: 20 April 2008
In recent years Usdaw has begun a revolution in the way we go about recruiting and organising. Recruitment has always been at the top of our agenda. We have always talked about recruitment as our ‘life-blood’. But organising is about a lot more than recruiting numbers into the Union. An organising approach is about putting the workplace rep at the hub of everything the Union does. It's about the members seeing their Union alive and thriving in their workplace, with our reps as the heartbeat. Why do we want to build a Union that is organised around reps like this? It's because only such a Union can deliver a better deal for Usdaw members. We all want to see the big picture improve - better pay, better conditions, better training, better career and promotion opportunities for all. Without strength of organisation in the workplace, the Union simply won't have the influence to change that big picture. Achieving an organised Union like this does not happen by chance and fortune. It requires innovative thinking, a professional strategy, and extensive resourcing. But most of all it requires the hard work, effort and commitment of Usdaw reps themselves. This booklet includes a number of reps telling us, in their own words, how they have pioneered the organising approach. Remember, what starts with small achievements in the workplace can lead ultimately to a better and brighter future for Usdaw members and their families. So read on, get on board and join us in organising! This booklet is designed to help Union reps, officials and members with all aspects of Union organisation in the workplace. It pulls together many of the techniques we have learned on our journey to becoming an organising Union. The booklet does not have to be read from cover to cover. Each section stands alone, so you can dip into it to look at just one topic. You may want to copy a section to use in a specific activity. As well as a resource to help plan and run organising campaigns, the booklet could be used in training and other discussion settings. We hope you find it useful.
