How you can get more involved

04 October 2007

Being an Usdaw rep can be a very rewarding, interesting and worthwhile position. It’s not an easy role, but Usdaw’s education and training opportunities can make even the most nervous person confident and informed.

Do you know anyone in your workplace who just needs that little bit of persuading to take on one of the many roles within the Union?

Have a look at the various roles Usdaw offers and consider whether you can take on more responsibility. Alternatively one of your colleagues might be interested in getting more involved. Remember Usdaw is full of ordinary working people making a real difference in their workplaces by giving their time, energy and commitment to make the world of work a fairer and better place to be. Join us.

Recruitment

The lifeblood of the Union, and with more than 80,000 new members signed up every year Usdaw reps are clearly expert recruiters. The Union's membership is growing every day but we can't sit back and wait for new recruits to sign up. It's our job to get active.

Campaigns

With award-winning campaigns under its belt like Freedom From Fear, Supporting Parents and Carers and other exciting new ones in the pipeline, you could help raise all of the important issues among both staff and customers. There's also a wealth of campaign material to back you up.

Lifelong Learning

One of the Union's biggest success stories, this exciting initiative has helped thousands of members return to learning to help both their career prospects and personal development. Become a learning rep and you could play your part to help yourself and your colleagues.

Health and safety

A vital issue for all workers. Workplaces with well-organised safety reps are safer than unorganised sites. And with expert training from Usdaw combined with your legal rights as a health and safety rep you could play your part in making your members more safe at work.

Looking after our members

Representing members at grievance or disciplinary hearings is a bread-and-butter issue for Usdaw. You can play your part to ensure fairness at work, inform your colleagues of the procedures and offer help and advice on a range of work-related issues.

Young workers

The Union's future and, with more than 250,000 workers aged under 26 employed in Usdaw sectors, the potential for growth is massive. The Union has divisional committees and co-ordinators to generate involvement from young workers. If you're under 26 it could be you.

Equality issues

Usdaw aims to attract members from across all sections of society regardless of a person's gender, colour, religion, disability or sexuality. The union operates equality forums across the UK which encourage members to participate fully in the Union.
