Under-age sales focus for Respect for Shopworkers Day11 July 2005
Youngsters trying to buy goods such as alcohol and tobacco cause major problems for many shopworkers. Usdaw’s research has found that refusing under-age sales is the most common trigger for abuse, intimidation and even violence against retail staff. Selling age-restricted products, even by mistake, can result in shopworkers being sent to court and given a large fine. That’s why we are focussing on these problems in this year’s Respect for Shopworkers Day on 13 July. Usdaw have produced a new leaflet Preventing under-age sales (Leaflet 351) to help our members: 1. Deal with the problems that youngsters can cause them. 2. Prevent under-age sales and the court action or fines that can ensue. If you are subject to abuse, threats or violence, check out the new leaflet and contact your Usdaw rep or Area Organiser for support in doing a risk assessment and ensuring practical measures are taken to protect you. To help our campaign, or for support, advice and practical measures you can take to make your store safer, visit the Freedom From Fear campaign section on the web site.
Usdaw needs to hear from you ...Have you been subject to abuse, intimidation or attacks from youngsters when you have asked them for ID, or refused to make a sale?If so, we’d like to hear your story so that we can make government, the police and retailers aware of what our members put up with. Please e-mail us your story, or call our Media and Communications Department on 0161 224 2804. Your evidence can be anonymous if you prefer, but please let us know your company and store location.
