Usdaw is voted campaigning union of the year for the second year running

08 July 2005

Usdaw was celebrating after winning campaign of the year for the second year running at the TUC Press and PR Awards 2005.

The union picked up the Best Campaign Award for its Protect Christmas Day initiative that resulted in a change in the law in October 2004 that guaranteed its 340,000 members wouldn’t be forced to work on 25 December.

Usdaw prides itself on being one of the UK’s most effective campaigning unions making a real difference in the workplace through real changes in the law or in negotiations with retail organisations.

It was a good night for the union’s communications team as it came a close second in the race for Best Trade Union Web site after winning the title in 2004. The web site was described by the judges as a ‘lively, responsive, member friendly site’ that ‘encourages involvement in campaigns.’

In-house union magazine Arena picked up third in the Best Photograph for a ‘moody’ picture of a pregnant woman used to support Usdaw’s new Supporting Parents and Carers campaign. Arena was also highly praised as ‘outstanding’ for providing ‘useful and practical advice’.

“Yet again Usdaw’s reputation as a campaigning union has been recognised by the whole trade union movement,” says Usdaw General Secretary John Hannett. “Our success with the Protect Christmas Day campaign has taken away the real threat that large supermarkets could open on 25 December.”

“We pride ourselves on not only running campaigns but making sure they get results, so to be recognised once again by the rest of the trade union movement is particularly satisfying.”
