Shopworkers union votes to continue political campaigning15 November 2004Usdaw has won an emphatic endorsement from its members to carry on political campaigning. In a postal ballot of all its members a majority of 81.4% voted to keep Usdaw’s Political Fund. In the ballot 45,406 members voted YES to keep the Fund with 10,350 voting against. John Hannett, Usdaw General Secretary, said: “This is great news for our members and will allow Usdaw to continue campaigning in the political arena. Our recent campaigns on Freedom From Fear, Protecting Christmas Day for shopworkers, the National Minimum Wage, Lifelong Learning and supporting parents and carers have all caught the attention of our members, politicians and employers. We can now carry on this work with the full backing of our members.” Notes to Editors: • By law the union has to ask its members every ten years if they want Usdaw to continue with its Political Fund which allows the union to campaign on issues that have a political content. • Usdaw is the UK’s fifth largest trade union with over 339,000 members. Most Usdaw members are shopworkers, although the union does have many members in other trades including transport, distribution, call centres, home shopping, food manufacturing, dairy process, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. • More information and news releases are available at our online Newsroom. • Journalists can subscribe to receive Usdaw news releases via our online e-news service.
