Usdaw's optimistic future after years of recruitment increase

14 September 2004

Usdaw General Secretary John Hannett backed calls yesterday for unions to focus on organising - quoting the “tremendous dividends” that Usdaw has reaped in recent years through focused campaigns and initiatives.

Speaking during a debate at the TUC Congress in Brighton, John Hannett said unions can no longer expect that people would join trade unions as a matter of course, with recruitment “taking care of itself”.

He told delegates that Usdaw had achieved success in recruitment, with a net increase of 14,000 members during the last year alone.

He said the TUC Organising Academy has been a real catalyst for unions - with Usdaw moving the agenda on by forming its own Organising Academy. He said the Usdaw academy, now in its second year, has reaped “tremendous dividends”, with “key activists keen to give the right message.”

John Hannett referred to Usdaw’s Freedom From Fear campaign against violence and abuse suffered by shopworkers as an example of how unions can run successful campaigns on issues that strike a chord with members.

He added: “In an organised workplace any employer can rely on our view being authentic, grounded and widely supported. We have clout and we have influence.” He added: “We need to work together in a joined-up way and to recruit those many workers who are not yet in the trade union movement.”

John Hannett was speaking in support of a composite motion that called for greater emphasis on union organising, placing it at the heart of all union activity.
