Play Fair at the Olympics

26 July 2004

The TUC, working with Oxfam and others, have recently launched a campaign to get global sportswear retailers to respect workers' rights. Usdaw is supporting the campaign which is called Play Fair at the Olympics.

In the run up to the Olympics, millions of workers in poor countries are making sports shoes and clothes that will be worn by competitors and consumers during the games. Factories in countries like Kenya, Indonesia and Thailand are desperate to secure orders from the big brands like Nike, Reebok, Puma and Fila. This means workers being put under pressure to work very long hours, including forced overtime, and working for poverty pay. The majority of these workers are women and many suffer appalling ill health as a result of their working conditions.

Play Fair at the Olympics is a massive campaign which aims to put pressure on companies to stop women workers being exploited. The campaign is NOT calling for a boycott of sportswear goods.

Usdaw members can support the campaign in a number of ways:

• Send postcards (available in the campaign pack) and e-mails demanding the sportswear companies respect workers' rights.

• Send for more copies of the Fair Play campaign materials to give to work colleagues and friends. Write to Mairin Power, TUC, European Union and International Relations Department, Congress House, Great Russell Street, London WC1B 3LS telephone: 0207 467 1357 or e-mail: mapower@tuc.org.uk.

• Put posters up or distribute flyers at work.

• Discuss the campaign at your branch meeting.

• Send a letter to your local newspaper about the campaign.

• To find out more and read the full report visit www.fairolympics.org (Tel: 0870 333 2700)
