Take part in BBC News Online debate on Freedom From Fear

13 May 2004

Violence, threats and abuse suffered by UK shopworkers has been chosen as a major topic for debate on BBC News Online.

The online debate - headlined ''Shopping rage threatens UK workers" - encourages readers to give their own views and experiences.

Julian Knight, BBC News Online consumer affairs reporter, describes cases of verbal abuse and serious physical assault suffered by shopworkers.

The article explains how Usdaw, the shopworkers' union, is raising awareness of this issue through its Freedom From Fear campaign.

Also included is the story of one shopworker who had his knee broken in two places by a violent shopper. "The attack turned me into a virtual recluse. I find it difficult to leave my house and I can't work," the shopworker is quoted as saying.

You can read the full story and take part in the debate at BBC News Online.
