Temperature in the workplace among the hot topics for debate

05 May 2004

More than 150 delegates contributed to debates at the Annual Delegate Meeting (ADM) of Usdaw, the UK's fifth biggest union, speaking on a wide range of subjects including rights at work, wages, politics, pensions, health and safety, trade union values and education.

Sir Bill Connor, attending his last ADM as Usdaw's General Secretary, was delighted that so many delegates had actively taken part in the most important event of Usdaw's calendar.

Over the course of four days towards the end of last month at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool, more than 50 propositions were debated. Propositions carried included:

  • In the interests of a good work/life balance, a call for closing time in all stores to be no later than 4pm on both Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.
  • Welcoming working parents' new rights to request flexible working, but calling for changes to the system to include an extra appeals stage, the right to make more than one request per year and changes to allow all workers with caring responsibilities the right to apply.
  • To assist recruitment, a call for members at companies with which Usdaw has an agreement to be granted paid release to recruit in stores other than their own.
  • In view of the growing number of pensioners facing severe financial hardship, a call for the Government to end means-testing and increase the state pension.

Sir Bill Connor said: "Our annual delegate meeting is always lively, with many informed contributions from delegates. This year, it was particularly encouraging to hear so many new delegates speak from the rostrum on a variety of subjects. We clearly have strength throughout Usdaw and a membership that is willing to speak up and let its voice be heard."

Note to Editors

  • Usdaw is the UK's fifth largest union, with over 330,000 members. Most Usdaw members work in retail, but the union does have members in numerous other trades.
