Thousands of new members help Usdaw reach 325,000 mark02 September 2003Membership of premier retail union Usdaw has crashed through the 325,000 barrier after thousands of new recruits signed up in the eight months to August. Two major initiatives launched during the last 12 months have boosted membership in sectors which are notorious for a high turnover of staff. General Secretary Sir Bill Connor said: "Our Freedom From Fear campaign, which aims to protect shopworkers from violence and abuse, has been a huge success. This has revealed the dangers faced by retail staff from robbers, shoplifters and abusive customers. We are working with employers to minimise the risks to staff and will hold a National Respect for Shopworkers Day on September 17. "We have also launched our own Organising Academy with 15 activists seconded from their workplace, and employed by Usdaw, to help recruit and organise in shops and factories across the UK. "This has been a very successful year already for Usdaw. We are determined to build on this progress and, with our nationwide team of officials and reps, I'm confident we will make significant gains by the end of 2003."
