TUC backs Usdaw’s campaign to end violence and abuse in the retail sector

11 September 2003

The TUC’s seven million members have a crucial role to play in making the workplace safe and ensuring the success of the first National Respect for Shopworkers Day on September 17, Usdaw’s Deputy General Secretary John Hannett told the TUC in Brighton today.

John Hannett made the appeal when he spoke in the health and safety debate, drawing attention to the union’s Freedom From Fear campaign. He reminded delegates of the appalling incidents of violence and abuse against retail staff, and urged them, as trade unionists and customers, to give the campaign and next Wednesday their full support.

“On September 17, we want to see the UK say no to violence and abuse against shopworkers. We’re all customers, and many of us will have friends and relatives in the sector which employs around 2.7 million people. These workers deserve our respect. they provide a fantastic service and perform a valuable role in the community.

“On the day, we will have more than 100 stalls across the UK getting our message across. There will also be a London launch with a number of special events.”

Timetable for the London Launch as follows:

10am Unveiling of a special plaque, one of more than 3,000 UK-wide – stating that violence and abuse will not be tolerated – at the Co-op Welcome store, Camberwell New Road, London, SE5, by Usdaw’s Sir Bill Connor and John Hannett with Martin Beaumont Chief Executive Co-op Group, a Government minister (to be confirmed) and five victims of violence and abuse (see below for more details).
11am Leaflet/petition blitz on Oxford Street by Usdaw activists.
1.30pm Lobby of MPs at the Cabinet War Rooms, Westminster. Including the launch of a specially commissioned campaign theme tune.
4pm Meeting with Prime Minister Tony Blair at Downing Street.

David Valentine (Co-op Roehampton), Sharon King (Oxford & Swindon Co-op), Colin Marriott (Tesco, Brixton), Jacqui Clarke (Sainsbury, Bath), and Alan Platt (Kwik Save, Castleford) are all victims of either violence or abuse, and will be available for interview during the day. Contact details for the five are available from the Media and Communications office. • For more information on the campaign visit the Freedom From Fear section.
