National youth weekend gives voice to young members23 June 2003The perfect opportunity for young members to get involved in the varied activities of the union, and to find out more about Usdaw, is available as part of a special weekend exclusively for workers aged 26 and below. Up to five members from each division will get the chance to go to the National Youth Weekend, which will be held at the Warrington training centre on 15 & 16 November 2003. Young members should contact their local Usdaw office to register their interest as soon as possible as nominations have to be submitted by the 22 August. In previous years, young members, many attending their first union event, have said how enjoyable and worthwhile the weekend was. The weekend has also been the springboard for many members to get started in the union, becoming well trained and well informed activists and going on to carve out a career with Usdaw. The union also operates divisional Youth Committees, co-ordinated by a local Area Organiser, which provide young members with opportunities to become more active in the union. Each division then elects one of its youth activists onto the National Youth Committee, which is due to be re-formed for the coming year. The National Committee, co-ordinated by the Senior Training Officer, arranges national events and again gives young activists plenty of scope to take their union work onto a national and international level.
