Usdaw encourages Black and Asian members to get involved03 December 2002Usdaw hopes that an Ethnic Minorities Officer will help ensure that more Black and Asian people join and get active in the Labour Party, particularly at a time when support for the racist BNP has been on the rise. Usdaw will be working closely with the Labour Party over the coming months to prevent the BNP gaining a foothold in British politics and in particular in northern towns such as Oldham, Burnley and Blackburn. This new post is initially being offered on a one year basis, and Usdaw has contributed a significant part of the funding for it. With a good working knowledge of equality legislation and related policies, combined with exposure to the Labour Party and its activities at a local level, you will have experience of policy campaigning and of working with trade unions, and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Key Purpose: To develop and implement an integrated strategy for the promotion, support and inclusion of ethnic minorities within the Party, to develop potential candidates for elective representative office, and to provide (in conjunction with the Constitutional Unit) advice and guidance on constitutional issues relating to the representation of ethnic minorities at all levels of the Party's organisation and decision-making processes. Main Responsibilities: 1. Develop a strategic approach to the Party's relationship with UK's ethnic minority communities. 2. Plan and implement activities/initiatives to encourage the development of ethnic minority participation in the Party 3. Support and develop appropriate campaigning strategies forethnically diverse communities 4. Develop and implement membership recruitment and retention strategies specifically aimed at ethnic minority groups. 5. Increase the number of potential ethnic candidates for selection and develop talent pools within each Region, Scotland and Wales 6. Assist in the production of relevant materials and mailings on ethnic minority issues 7. Participate in the development of political and training programmes aimed specifically at ethnic minorities 8. Co-operate with and assist appropriate staff in liaison with trade unionists, international sister parties and other relevant ethnic minority and voluntary organisations, and develop networks where appropriate 9. Provide support and guidance to all regional offices and constituency labour parties as appropriate 10. Maintain day-to-day control of all tasks/projects, monitor progress and formally evaluate as necessary 11. Initiate and maintain communication channels to ensure that the General Secretary, appropriate NEC members and appropriate Minister(s) are suitably briefed 12. Undertake such other duties as the General Secretary may from time to time require The post holder will work closely with the Constitutional and LocalGovernment Units and other units as appropriate on relevant issues, and will be expected to carry out ad hoc tasks as directed by the AGS - Stakeholder Services and Marketing.
