Shopworkers Parliament meet in Blackpool17 April 2001Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott MP will be the special guest of the 310,000 strong shopworkers’ union Usdaw during its annual conference which begins this Sunday, 22, in the Winter Gardens, Blackpool. More than 1,300 members and officials from across the UK will meet for the four day Annual Delegate Meeting which will decide the union’s priorities and policies for the coming year Mr Prescott, a conference favourite, is expected to rally the troops ahead of the anticipated June 7 election. The exact timing of his speech to the conference will be given nearer the time. Mr Prescott is assured of a warm welcome from Usdaw members who are actively campaigning for the return of the Labour Government. Thousands of union members have seen their employment prospects and terms and conditions improve since 1997 following the introduction of the Employment Relations Act, the Working Time Directive, the Working Families Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit. On Sunday afternoon a special debate on Lifelong Learning will see Malcolm Wicks MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Education, Bob Fryer from the University for Industry, and Littlewoods' Chief Executive Barry Gibson promote learning opportunities for the UK's workforce. Other topics to be discussed during the week include trading hours, recruitment, the National Health Service, pensions, politics, rights at work and many others.
