Reaching out to LGBT members
The Midlands division held a very successful get-together for Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) members and supporters earlier this year.
Organised by the divisional equalities forum, the event was led by training officer Marci Wilson and brought together 37 activists for a weekend of workshops on tackling homophobic bullying.
Chair of the forum Simon Wright said: "A lot of members who came along had never been to a union event before, but by the time they left they were keen to find out more about how to get involved. The weekend gave us a rare opportunity to talk about the problems LGBT members face and what the union can do to help.
"It helped to remind us that reps can and do make a real difference supporting members experiencing homophobic bullying and harassment at work. LGBT members can often feel isolated at work and in the union too - the get-together was a first step in letting them know the union is organising on issues that matter to LGBT members and that they are not alone!"
