Dairy Crest in view

Dairy Crest can trace its history back to 1933 and the Milk Marketing Board, since then the milk industry has gone through significant changes but Usdaw reps are still active.

Two experienced reps who have seen more than their fair share of upheaval in the sector are Alf Davis and Tony Wallace.

They are making the most of a new agreement between Usdaw and Dairy Crest which marks the beginning of a new era.

Based at the Flixton depot in Greater Manchester, Alf Davis, 63, is in confident mood. "Thanks to the new policies I can really promote the benefits of union membership to current and potential members," he said. "People are beginning to see joining as an asset, they feel as though they're getting something for their money now.

"There's been a lot of changes over the years. We've had a lot of takeovers and a lack of continuity and the union hasn't always been viewed in a good light.

"But Dairy Crest are happy to work with Usdaw and we've made some real progress already. Things are looking bright for the future."

Meanwhile Tony Wallace, 59, from the Hull depot shares Alf's optimism. "I've worked in the dairy industry for 20 years and things have been difficult at times.

"We've had takeovers from Arla, Express and Northern Dairies and with each new owner a whole set of new procedures follow.

"But Dairy Crest is very pro-union and has shown a real commitment to sitting down and getting things sorted out.

"The working parties have been very constructive with both reps and management playing an equal role. We've got through a lot of work with some fantastic results, new policies and best practice.

"We now have clear and new guidelines on a full range of new facilities for union reps. This includes better recruitment facilities with access to inductions as well as new family friendly and disciplinary and grievance procedures.

"I've enjoyed being involved with the whole process. My job as a union rep seems more worthwhile and rewarding and I'd like to thank national officer John Gorle for all his help and support throughout."
